ITV confirms Coronation Street live episode

ITV have confirmed what many already knew, Coronation Street will have a live episode later this year.

The live episode will coincide with the 50th anniversary of Coronation Street, in which a tram will crash onto the famous cobbles with fans left wondering who will live and who will die. Speaking on the official Coronation Street website, a press officer told them

“Everyone is very excited, if not to say a little nervous, about the prospect of a live episode but we felt it was fitting to go out live to the nation to celebrate such a prestigious anniversary.”

Last Saturday, actor Keith Duffy, who plays barman Ciaran McCarthy let slip that there would be a live episode. It is not the first time that Coronation Street have had a live episode. In 2000, they celebrated their 40th anniversary with jubilant scenes, although this live episode is expected to be more dramatic.

Coronation Street bosses will be hoping to emulate the success of the EastEnders live episode back in February, where over 16million viewers tuned in to see who killed Archie Mitchell. This episode so far remains the most watched programme of 2010.
