EastEnders tops 11 million for wedding
The wedding of Syed and Amira in EastEnders yesterday proved to be a hit with viewers as 11 million viewers tuned in – more than the number who saw the Christmas Day episode of the BBC soap.
EastEnders was the most watched programme of New Year’s Day with the wedding of Syed to Amira proving to be a hit with viewers. Fans were left wondering whether Christian Clarke would stop the wedding and reveal the details of his gay affair with Syed. The first instalment of the soap, in which Christian confessed to Syed’s mother Zainab about the affair, was seen by 9.7 million viewers while the second instalment – which followed Doctor Who – was seen by an average of 11.6 million viewers. This figure is higher than the Christmas Day episode which saw villain Archie Mitchell killed off. The first episode peaked at 10.8 million viewers while the second episode peaked with a massive 12.4 million viewers.
Meanwhile Coronation Street enjoyed ratings success itself with 8.5 million tuning in for its first episode and 9.7 million for the second episode. Earlier in the evening, Emmerdale rated well breaking the 7 million mark with 7.2 million viewers – its highest rated episode over the festive period.
