Hit musical comedy series Glee, which airs on Fox in America and E4 in the UK, has been honoured by GLAAD as has actress Drew Barrymore. The two were amongst the winners at the 21st annual GLAAD Media Awards – some awards were given out in March of this year in New York while more will be presented in June in Sans Francisco. Glee was honoured with the Outstanding Comedy Series trophy on Saturday evening. Glee creator Ryan Murphy praised the performance of his cast in the show praising in particular openly lesbian actress Jane Lynch and actor Chris Colfer who plays gay character Kurt Hummel. Murphy promised fans that the second season of Glee would introduce a new boyfriend for Kurt and that his character will not be turned into a victim.
Actress and director Drew Barrymore was honoured with the Vanguard Award – which recognises efforts to increase visibility and understanding of the gay community. Actress and comedian Wanda Sykes was also presented with an award and director Tom Ford for his film A Single Man. The filmed starred Colin Firth, Nicholas Holt and Julianne Moore and won Outstanding Wide Release Film. Ford wasn’t at the ceremony to pick up the award because of the grounding of most flights in Europe due to the cloud of Volcanic Ash spreading from Iceland. Instead his partner, Richard Buckley, picked up the gong. Openly gay singer, and former American Idol contestant, Adam Lambert performed several of his songs at the ceremony. It was presented gay actor Wilson Cruz and transgender actress Candis Cayne.
