The BBC’s revival of Upstairs Downstairs launched last night with over 7 million viewers according to early ratings data. The BBC One period drama is set several years after the close of the original LWT series with 165 Eaton Place being brought by and renovated by a wealthy new family. Actress Jean Marsh has reprised her role from the original series as Rose Buck and is joined by Keeley Hawes, Anne Reid, Eileen Atkins and Ed Stoppard for the brand new series.

According to early overnight figures Upstairs Downstairs returned with a healthy 7.6 million viewers. Interestingly that is near enough the same overnight figurer that ITV’s Downton Abbey launched too in September. Downton Abbey managed to increase its ratings over the course of its episodes – topping 9 million viewers. The test for Upstairs Downstairs now will be whether it can retain its audience, increase on it or only lose a small part of it.

Upstairs Downstairs continues tonight on BBC One.
