Barbara Windsor films final scenes on EastEnders

Barbara Windsor has filmed her final scenes on EastEnders after 16 years playing Peggy Mitchell.

The actress filmed her final scenes on the soap yesterday (16 July) in what The Sun described as a ‘tearful farewell’.

Windsor – who is also well known for her appearances in Carry On films – announced her decision to leave the show in October and her exit as Peggy is one of the most highly anticipated of recent years.

Fans have been pondering what will become of the pint-sized landlady; will bosses make the bold decision to kill Peggy off or will she have a happy exit? The news that the Queen Vic will burn down later this year has added fuel to the fire – if you’ll pardon the pun. It’s speculated that others may perish too following Bryan Kirkwood’s decision to have a clear-out.

Peggy’s storylines have included battling breast cancer, disastrous marriages to Frank Butcher and Archie Mitchell and feeling the wrath of Pauline Fowler after cruelly outing her son Mark as HIV positive. A feud with Pat Evans (Pam St. Clement) over their mutual love interest, Frank, eventually gave way to a friendship popular with fans of the serial.

While Windsor may have finished filming on EastEnders fans will have to wait a little bit longer to see what transpires in her final scenes as the character will remain on-screen for several weeks to come.
