Frank Wappat Leaves BBC after 40 Years
BBC Newcastle broadcaster Frank Wappat has announced he is to leave the station for health reasons.
Three months ago Frank suffered a further stroke, which has left him with a condition known as Aphasia.
“Thanks to the dedicated staff of Wansbeck Hospital I’m back on my feet and adjusting to life at home. The reality is that I can no longer give 110% to my radio shows, so I have sadly resigned from my broadcasting commitments. No one likes to make tough decisions and this one has been the hardest of my life.” – Frank Wappat
Frank’s career at the BBC spans 40 years and for the last few years he has produced and presented two BBC Newcastle shows: Sunday morning’s Inspirational Show from 6 – 7.30am and the award winning Frank Wappat Music show from 7 – 10 pm.
“Frank has had an unprecedented career at BBC Newcastle spanning 40 years, a legendary record unlikely to be beaten. During his career he won two of the radio industries coveted Sony Awards and was voted among the region’s top 500 most influential people by the Newcastle Journal. Frank has had a tough battle with his health recently. I’m delighted he is recovering well and he leaves with our warmest wishes for the future.” – Managing Editor for BBC Newcastle, Andrew Robson
To celebrate the career of Frank Wappat there will be a special programme on BBC Newcastle on Sunday, 22nd August, from 7pm. Frank’s son, Paul Wappat, who previously worked for the BBC in Newcastle can be heard on the North East’s Smooth Radio weekdays at 4.00pm.
“I have the BBC, my listeners but more importantly my wife Susan, who has been at my side throughout this epic journey, to thank for my broadcasting career. I have a lot to be thankful for, the BBC for my broadcasting opportunities, but most of all my listeners who have continued to support me through the years.” – Frank Wappat
