Psychological suspense novel adapted for new ITV drama

Sophie Hannah’s The Point Of Rescue is to be adapted into a two part drama for ITV.

ITV has announced today that Point of Rescue will be a two part drama which will air next year on ITV 1. The drama will be directed by Charles Martin, who also directed Being Human and Married Single Other and star actress Olivia Williams and actor Darren Boyd who take up lead roles. Filming will begin this month on location in Buckinghamshire. The drama has been adapted for ITV by Hat Trick Productions.

Point of Rescue has been commissioned by Controller of Drama Commissioning Sally Haynes and ITV’s Director of Drama Commissioning Laura Mackie who comments: “Point of Rescue is an engrossing novel which not only tackles the dark side of motherhood but also mistaken identity and murder. It’s a superb adaptation of Sophie Hannah’s highly contemporary crime novel and I’m delighted that Olivia Williams is on board to play DS Charlie Zailer.”

The novel gained critical acclaim when first released in 2007. The Yorkshire Post review said at the time:  “Hannah’s greatest strength is the way she uses the conventions of the crime genre to produce novels that are indulgent pleasures, but with an extra edge.  The Point of Rescue isn’t simply a woman-in-jeopardy yarn about an overworked mother whose dreams of escape turn into a nightmare that threatens to destroy her life (although it works brilliantly on this level), it is also about the thrill of transgression, and the dangers that lurk within the most appealing of fantasies.”*
