JJ Abrams has said his Fox television series Fringe deserves a fourth season but will not dumb down to boost ratings. Fringe moves to Fox’s Friday evening line-up, from its previous Thursday evening home, amid much concern from its fans that the series will be cancelled. The Friday evening slot for Fox has been dubbed the “graveyard” because other failed shows such as Dollhouse and The Sarah Connor Chronicles all failed to find an audience there. With some writing off Fringe has dead JJ Abrams is arguing it deserves a fourth season but will not dumb down in order to get it.
Talking to TV Guide JJ Abrams explained that Fringe is about “a woman who was experimented on when she was a kid… about a man who might not have come from here… about a father who is holding incredible secrets including those that mean war. These are things we talked about at the very beginning. To not embrace that means that we will fail on other people’s terms, so, if we’re going to fail, let’s go down doing the most badass, weirdest, interesting, sophisticated version of a series that we could possibly do… Fringe deserves to live beyond season three.”
Fox have urged viewers not to write off Fringe just because its moving to Friday evenings and is throwing its support behind the quirky drama with an advertising campaign highlighting its move. However, whether Fringe gets a fourth season is another matter entirely.
