Skins actress defends MTV show amidst controversy

Actress Sofia Black D’elia has defended MTV’s teen-dram Skins amidst growing controversy, whipped up by the Parents Television Council, over its depiction of teenagers.

 

Actress Sofia Black D’elia has defended MTV’s teen-dram Skins amidst growing controversy, whipped up by the Parents Television Council, over its depiction of teenagers. The MTV series is based on the British drama, which airs on E4, of the same name. The Parents Television Council wasn’t keen on Skins before it even premiered on MTV describing it as the “most dangerous show” for children. Once Skins had premiered the PTC couldn’t wait to criticise the show and call for an investigation into it over sex scenes within the opening episode. But star Sofia Black D’elia has defended the drama.

 

“It’s what teens are doing. It’s the way teenagers believe, I think, especially you know in certain situations when you come from home lives where your parents don’t really support you or really listen to you. That’s what most of these kids are going through. And so, um, the drugs and the sex, they’re vices, and that’s what teenagers have.” – Sofia Black D’elia on HDNet’s Naught But Nice with Rob

 

The PTC are trying to put pressure on MTV and advertisers over the series and has also called for a federal inquiry into the sex scenes in the episode. The publicity though could result in ratings for the drama remaining high as more viewers tune in to see what the fuss is about. The opening episode was seen by 3.3 million viewers which, of point of interest, is 2 million more viewers than members of the PTC.
