A few more details about ABC’s forthcoming reboot of 1970s detective drama Charlie’s Angels have emerged. As already announced casting for the three new ‘angels’ is complete with Minka Kelly, Rachael Taylor and Annie Ilonzeh all cast in the roles. Actor Robert Wagner is nearing a deal to play the reclusive millionaire Charlie Townsend.

Entertainment Weekly are reporting that the new ‘angels’ may not be disgruntled graduates of the police academy, as per the original series, but instead reformed criminals. In the original series Charlie ‘rescued’ the angels from ‘hazardous’ police duties once they graduated and set them to work for him.

The monologue over the opening credits introduces the audience to this “once upon a time there were three little girls who went to the police academy”. However, by the fifth and final season of the original series only two of the ‘angels’ were graduates the third was a model! While details of the plot may yet change Charlie is likely to offer the three ‘angels’ a chance to reform themselves and hence they begin working for him.

As for the reclusive millionaire himself Charlie will still speak to the angels via a telephone/voice box and not video. As per the original series its unlikely the ‘angels’ will see him. Entertainment Weekly reports the reason for this may be explained within the series.

The new Charlie’s Angels will be more serious than the two Hollywood movies of the early 2000s and will be ‘adventure of the week’ in format with few serialized elements. Filming for the pilot begins in March and ABC will decided in April/May whether to commission a full series or not.
