NBCNBC is pushing ahead of its Prime Suspect remake by ordering a pilot. Plans by NBC to remake Prime Suspect for an American audience first emerged two years ago in September 2009. The British series starred Helen Mirren and ran for seven seasons between 1991 and 2006. It was a ratings and critical success and Mirren’s portrayal of DCI Jane Tennison not only won awards but also led the way to subsequent series’ featuring high profile female police officers – such as The Commander and Blue Murder.

According to Entertainment Weekly NBC has ordered a pilot for its Prime Suspect remake with Peter Berg as executive producer/director and Alexandra Cunningham (of Desperate Housewives) as showrunner. There’s no still detail, as yet, on casting for the remake.

NBC has also ordered an “ambitious” new historical drama set in the aftermath of the American Civil War. The Crossing, formerly titled Reconstruction, revolves around ‘a soldier who crosses the country and settles into a complicated town where he is welcomed as a savoir – whether he likes it or not’. Northern Exposure creator Joshua Brand is showrunner.
