Michael Gough has died

Veteran actor Michael Gough has passed away; he was in his 90s. The actor appeared in a wide range of roles on television and film including several Batman films as the butler Alfred.

Veteran actor Michael Gough has passed away; he was in his 90s. The actor appeared in a wide range of roles on television and film including several Batman films as the butler Alfred. The actors exact age isn’t known though he was either 94 or 95 and had an extensive career on television, stage and film. His roles on television included The Adventures of Robin Hood, The Count of Monte Christo, The Saint, Blakes 7, Brideshead Revisited and Colditz.

Gough also appeared in Doctor Who twice; playing the villainous Toymaker in the 1966 story The Celestial Toymaker opposite William Hartnell. It was nearly twenty years before he returned to the BBC sci-fi series in The Arc of Infinity opposite Peter Davison. Gough was due to reprise his original role of the Toymaker opposite Colin Baker in 1985 but Doctor Who was cancelled by Michael Grade before production began on the story. Gough’s other connection with the series was his third marriage to actress Anneke Wills who played Polly Wright in the mid 1960s.

In the late 1980s he was cast in the role of Alfred, the Butler, in the Batman film franchise appearing in Batman, Batman Forever and Batman & Robin. His film work continued throughout the 1990s and 2000s working on several other Tim Burton films including, most recently, Alice in Wonderland.
