Children's Ward to be released on DVD

GranadaThe first series of Granada’s award-winning Children’s Ward is to be released on DVD.

The BAFTA winning drama was created by Paul Abbott and Kay Mellor in 1989 – both of whom would go on to produce more award winning adult drama on television. Abbott’s notable hits include State of Play and Shameless while Kay Mellor’s other work includes Playing the Field and Fat Friends. Children’s Ward started off life as a the pilot play Blackbird Singing in the Dead of Night in the Dramarama strand. Russell T. Davies was also a writer and producer on Children’s Ward in the 1990s (he also created CBBC dramas Dark Season and Century Falls).

The ITV drama ran for 12 seasons between 1989 and 2000 and Network DVD are releasing the first series of the drama. Many future stars appeared Children’s Ward over the years – quite a few of whom went on to find fame in Coronation Street. Amongst the famous faces to appear in the series were Tina O’Brien, Ralf Little, Jane Danson and Tim Vincent.

The series is still fondly remembered but hasn’t been repeated since it was axed in 2000. Fans of the drama will now be able to refresh their memories with the first season DVD which will be released on July 4th. The DVD also contains the pilot Blackbird Singing in the Dead of Night.
