Cult News Wrap: Supernatural, Doctor Who, Eureka and Warehouse 13

jensen ackles{jcomments on}A round-up of cult and sci-fi related news from across the week with The CW ordering more Supernatural and Nikita for the new season, Steven Moffat promising a big year for Doctor Who in 2013 and Kate Melgrew joining the cast of Warehouse 13.

The CW are hoping that Supernatural will be returning next year for another season – even though this year’s season isn’t out of the way yet. CW entertainment chief Mark Pedowitz critics “It’s not intended to be the last season. We’ll see where the ratings go. We hope the show keeps going.” The seventh season of Supernatural launches on September 23rd.

The CW has ordered an additional episode of Supernatural and also Nikita. That means the episode counts for the two shows will be 23 instead of 22. The CW has also ordered two additional episodes of Gossip Girl and two for 90210. Fans of The Vampire Diaries may be disappointed to learn though The CW hasn’t ordered any additional episodes for its new season.

Doctor Who showrunner Steven Moffat has promised 2013, the 50th anniversary of the BBC sci-fi series, will be “amazing”. Moffat told TV Line; “I’ve got various plans, but all I can say emphatically is it will be huge. It won’t be just one thing…. We’ll be doing lots of stuff. The plans are quite extensive, and changing all the time. Oh my God, we will hit that year very, very hard indeed.” Moffat teased the possibility of a multi-Doctor story “Possibly…. It’s so far in the future, it’s only a set of notions.” It was recently confirmed that Matt Smith and Karen Gillan will be returning for the seventh season of Doctor Who which is seemingly to be spread across 2012 and 2013.

Syfy has ordered a sixth season of its veteran series Eureka – even though it is still airing the show’s fourth season. Syfy has already committed itself to a fifth season but has now ordered six episodes to form a sixth series. There are conflicting reports though whether the sixth will be Eureka’s last with the Hollywood Reporter quoting Syfy president Mark Stern as saying “Although we do not have a commitment beyond six episodes for the sixth season, we are hopeful that this will not be the end of the franchise.”

Kate Melgrew is to appear in four episodes of Syfy series Warehouse 13. The actress, best known for her role of Captain Kathryn Janeway in Star Trek: Voyager, will play the role of Jane, a regent. “She has mystical and magical powers beyond all articulation. I play an important part regarding the future of the Warehouse, and also its history. You will increasingly understand her mysterious value to the warehouse and everybody in it. ” Melgrew speaking to TV Guide. The actress has already stated she would happily return for further episodes of Warehouse 13. Melgrew isn’t the first Star Trek: Voyager cast member to appear in the Syfy series, Jeri Ryan recently guest starred in the series.
