BBC Two orders second series of The Hour
BBC Two has ordered a second series of its 1950s based drama The Hour starring Dominic West, Anna Chancellor, Romola Garai and Ben Whishaw.
BBC Two controller Janice Hadlow confirmed The Hour had been re-commissioned at the Media Guardian Edinburgh Television Festival. The six-part drama concluded its run on BBC Two on Tuesday evening with 1.6 million viewers which is somewhat less than the 3 million viewers who tuned in for its opening episode.
The Hour has met with mixed reviews in some quarters and writer Abi Morgan has admitted to making some mistakes – especially in the way the characters speak such as using modern phrases. The drama was set in a 1950s BBC newsroom during the Suez Canal crisis and the uprisings in Hungary against Soviet control. The series covered the journalists attempts to cover the story while constantly meeting opposition from the government while producer Bel (Romola Garai ) embarked on a taboo affair with anchor Hector (Dominic West) and Freddie (Ben Whishaw) was drawn into a deadly conspiracy.
