ITN appoints new 5 News editor

ITN, who are to resume producing news programming for Channel 5 when the current deal with Sky News to provide the service ends, have hired their editor for 5 News.

The company who have produced ITV News since 1955 and Channel 4 News since 1982 are to resume production of 5 News after an absence of six years. ITN originally produced 5 News from 1997 until 2005 when the contract was issued to news rival Sky.

Today ITN confirm they have appointed CNN International’s Director of Coverage and former ITV News Programme Editor Geoff Hill as Editor for Channel 5’s news output.

The ITN service will launch in early 2012 and Hill will lead all editorial and management decisions to evolve 5 News. Hill is to also oversee the news team’s transition from the current Sky operation to the new newsroom and studio being developed by ITN at Channel 5’s headquarters.

Current 5 News boss David Kermode is moving to ITV breakfast flop Daybreak to attempt to boost its flagging ratings.
