David Jason admits Royal Bodyguard mistakes

David JasonDavid Jason has admitted his BBC One comedy The Royal Bodyguard was not a the hit he had hoped.

The comedy launched on Boxing Day to impressive figures; it had an overnight audience of 7 million viewers while final consolidated figures placed the premier over 8 million viewers. The Royal Bodyguard failed to impress the critics though who were quick to slate the series and in a new interview Jason has admitted to errors with the comedy.

You can’t get it right all the time… We tried, we had a good go, we enjoyed doing it, and yeah, perhaps I think we didn’t quite bring it off and it came in for quite a lot of harsh criticism. But there you are – if you don’t put your head above the parapet you won’t get it shot off. You’ve got to do that occasionally.” – David Jason speaking to BBC News

The comedy concluded on Monday evening on BBC One with under 3 million viewers. While it may have launched well viewers were quick to turn off over subsequent weeks with ratings dropping by a big 6 million by the time of Monday’s episode. The huge ratings slump and negative reception from the critics means its unlikely The Royal Bodyguard will return.
