Heidi Thomas reacts to Upstairs Downstairs axe

Writer Heidi Thomas has reacted to the BBC’s decision to axe Upstairs Downstairs after two seasons.Thomas was behind the BBC’s revival of Upstairs Downstairs in 2010 and wrote the majority of the episodes produced by the corporation, include four episodes of the recent second series. Over the weekend it emerged the BBC had decided not to order a third series of the period drama after ratings dropped from 8 million viewers to under 6 million.
The writer reacted to the news on Twitter posting ‘Really touched by all the love and sadness for Upstairs Downstairs. It was made by a tremendous team and I can’t praise them enough. Truly sad about Updown, but can now fully and wholeheartedly honour the massive commitments I have elsewhere, including Call The Midwife’

The BBC’s revival of Upstairs Downstairs starred Keeley Hawes, Ed Stoppard, Neil Jackson, Anne Reid, Sarah Gordy and Alex Kingston with original series actress, and co-creator, Jean Marsh reprising her role of Rose Buck. Fans have set up a Twitter campaign to save the drama.
